The 80 years of Italian culture in Sweden through the activity of the Italian Cultural Institute of Stockholm is an important anniversary.

In the headquarters of Linnegatan 16 and then, since 1958, in the splendid building by Gio Ponti at Gärdesgatan 14, the Institute has hosted the protagonists of scientific and humanistic culture who have passed through the history of our country and who, upon arriving in Stockholm, have sometimes “discovered” a new cultural world with which to confront themselves. A path that has contributed to the development and growth of cultural relations between Italy and Sweden.

To find myself 80 years after the inception of the Institute of Culture remembering its activities is a great honour and for this reason we decided to take up the challenge thrown down by the difficult time we are experiencing, by proposing a series of initiatives that will constitute a sort of special edition of this year’s programme. Not a nostalgic ‘the way we were’, but a lens to observe with greater depth how much we have changed in recent decades and to be able to affirm with certainty that we will continue to be here in the years to come. I will borrow one of the values that Italo Calvino, in his ‘Six Memos for the Next Millennium’, proposed to bring lightness into the millennium in which we live today: ‘Take life lightly, for lightness is not superficiality, but gliding over things from above, without heavy weights bearing down on your heart’. A thoughtful lightness, of lively curiosity, attention, a lightness that brings us closer to others and that teaches us to work more and better to ensure that the wings always get the better of the nets that sometimes seem to imprison our lives.
