The European Day of Languages in Salerno on 29 September

Established in 2001 by the Council of Europe, the “European Day of Languages” is celebrated every year around the world with the aim of improving knowledge and encouraging learning of European languages.
Since 2009, several editions of the event have been held at the Accademia Italiana Salerno, an Italian public school for international students founded in 1997, recognised by the Ministry of Education and the exam venue for the Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Siena.
This year’s edition, sponsored by the European Commission’s Representation in Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), the Campania Region, and the City of Salerno, takes place on Thursday 29 September, starting at 9.30 a.m. at the City Hall of Salerno and at the Accademia Italiana itself.
The programme envisages a series of conferences on the theme “Multilingualism in modern-day Europe: a tool for mobility, intercultural dialogue and integration”, with talks from representatives of the European Commission, the MAECI and the Ministry of Education, among others; this will be followed by workshops and refresher seminars on language teaching and certifications, organised by the Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Siena and the Association of Schools of Italian as a Second Language (ASILS); the third and final phase will involve awarding and assigning scholarships to deserving students, with the participation of the International Association of Language Centres (IALC).
