Recognition for the Italian architect, naturalized Brazilian, at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
Architecture: Special Golden Lion awarded to Lina Bo Bardi
The Special Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in memoriam will be awarded to Lina Bo Bardi, architect, designer, stage designer, artist and critic, of Italian origin but naturalized Brazilian, at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
If there is an architect who better than any other represents the theme of the 2021 Architecture Biennale, it’s Lina Bo Bardi. Her career as a designer, editor, curator and activist reminds us of the architect’s role as coordinator (convener) and, importantly, as creator of collective visions. Lina Bo Bardi also embodies the tenacity of the architect in difficult times, whether they are marked by wars, political conflicts or immigration, and her ability to maintain creativity, generosity and optimism in all circumstances. (…) The Special Golden Lion awarded to the late Lina Bo Bardi is the recognition, now long overdue, of a prestigious career undertaken between Italy and Brazil and of a contribution aimed at reconsidering the role of the architect as a social facilitator. Finally it stands as a tribute to a woman who simply represents the architect in the highest possible sense. – Hashim Sarkis, curator of the 2021 Architecture Biennale
The award to Lina Bo Bardi will be celebrated on Saturday 22 May 2021 during the inauguration ceremony of the Architecture Biennale 2021.
