A critical interpretation of Canto I of Purgatory

Categories: Literature and Publishing
Webinar organised by the Italian Cultural Institute of Istanbul in collaboration with the University of Ankara.

On March 21, at 6pm Istanbul time (GMT+3), the Italianist Bülent Ayyıldız will hold a webinar explaining and exploring different aspects of the famous Canto I of Purgatory.

In fact, this canto is the subject of a wealth of critical literature committed to resolving the numerous issues of literary history that arise within, in particular in relation to the situation of Dante the character-poet struggling with Cato, the keeper of Purgatory.

The webinar offers a comprehensive interpretation that references the works of historians such as Jacques Le Goff. It explains the nature of the Purgatory established by Dante Alighieri and the innovative approach of the poet in the treatment of Purgatory itself.

Bülent Ayyıldız is a lecturer in the Department of Italian Language and Literature of the University of Ankara. His most recent work is Ortaçağ İtalyan Edebiyatı [Italian Medieval Literature], Çizgi, 2019.
