The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago presents from 23 May to 8 July a photographic exhibition curated by Angelo Maggi and Michelangelo Sabatino entitled ‘G.E. Kidder Smith Photographer: Discovering Italy’.

‘G.E. Kidder Smith: Discovering Italy’ is an exhibition in three different locations that aims to examine the photographic legacy of G.E. Kidder Smith on the occasion of the publication of the book ‘G.E. Kidder Smith Builds: The Travel of Architectural Photography’.

The three exhibitions are entitled ‘At Home in America’, ‘Building Books’ and ‘Discovering Italy’ respectively.

‘Discovering Italy’, which is hosted in the Institute’s premises, presents a selection of photographs of Italian architecture, both historical and modern, produced by Kidder Smith.

The photographer examined Italian cities and architecture through the eyes of a modern architect and created a transatlantic dialogue aimed at educating Americans about the challenges and opportunities of critically coexisting with the past.

The encounter with Italian architecture resulted in ‘Italy Builds. Its Modern Architecture and Native Inheritance’ (1955), published in both English and Italian, while a second work by the photographer, ‘The Magnificence of Italy’ (1957-61), was never printed.
