The Blank Contemporary Art (Bergamo) and Depo (Istanbul), in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Istanbul, present  Gian Maria Tosatti’s new project, ‘Il mio cuore è vuoto come uno specchio – Episodio di Istanbul’ (My heart is empty like a mirror – Istanbul Episode), curated by Devrim Kadirbeyoğlu and Antonello Tolve, a project created with the support of the Italian Council (7th Edition, 2019), programme for the international promotion of Italian contemporary art of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

The artist’s investigation focuses on the crisis of democracy and the consequent disappearance of Western civilization. In 2018, Gian Maria Tosatti began a pilgrimage around the world that took him to different cities and countries with the objective of portraying the complex nature of their current states. Each work created through this process represents an episode within an ideal visual novel, in which visions, prophecies and reality are indistinguishable.

The Istanbul Episode – which comes after Catania, Riga, Cape Town and Odessa – is an installation that Tosatti developed after five years of local research. The multiple suggestions gathered along the way have been put together to form a powerful and moving visual story.

Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980) is a visual artist. His projects are long-term investigations into specific issues related to the concept of identity, from both a political and spiritual point of view. His work consists primarily of large-scale site-specific installations, conceived for entire buildings or urban areas. His activities often involve the communities in the places where he works.
