The Italian Cultural Institute of Amsterdam presents in collaboration with ‘Ponte tra Culture’ the video show dedicated to Leonardo Sciascia entitled ‘Racalmuto–America: viaggio di sola andata‘ (Racalmuto-America: one-way trip)
The show will be available on the YouTube channel of the Italian Cultural Institute from 1 to 15 August 2022.
The adaptation and the theatrical text are by Juan Francisco Florido, with Valentina Blando Osejo and directed by Gianluca Barbadori and Valeria Bassi.
The text written by Juan Francisco Florido is a theatrical adaptation freely inspired and partially drawn from the stories in the collection of short stories ‘The Wine-Dark Sea‘ by Leonardo Sciascia. The skeleton of the text is the story ‘Il Lungo Viaggio’ (The Long Journey), which involves Sicilians who, having sold all their possessions, use the money raised and to pay a human trafficker to carry them illegally to America. During the trip, to pass the time, the group of immigrants begins to tell some of the stories included in the book ‘The Wine-Dark Sea’. After several days of travelling locked up in the ship’s hold, the smuggler finally drops them off, leaving them on a deserted beach. But a bitter surprise awaits them when they discover that they have been abandoned on a beach in Sicily instead of reaching the much yearned-after America.
