From 9 April to 8 May the Italian Cultural Institute of Osaka presents in collaboration with the international photography festival ‘Kyotographie’ the exhibition by Maïmouna Guerresi entitled ‘Rûh / Spirito’
Maïmouna Guerres is an Italian-Senegalese multimedia artist who works with photography, sculpture, video and installations .
In her artistic career she has developed a fascinating and introspective vision on the multiple perspectives of her life within two cultures: European and African . She literally connected these worlds through he multi-ethnic family and commitment to Sufi spirituality.
Using a hybrid visual language , Maïmouna Guerresi communicates the beauty of cultural diversity , while addressing the multiple issues related to multi- ethnic contemporaneity . Islamic art and literature provide an inexhaustible source of inspiration for her work, with their mystical revelations, metaphors, insights, sacred verses and thaumaturgical powers.
The works of art by Maïmouna reaffirm a universally recognisable feminine energy that translates into spiritual evolution , while at the same time decontextualizing and decolonizing the various stereotyped ideas of women in the Islamic world .
