On the occasion of Dantedì, composer Nicola Piovani, Oscar winner in 1999 for the music of the film ‘Life Is Beautiful’ by Roberto Benigni, celebrates the Supreme Poet by conducting his own composition ‘La Vita Nuova by Nicola Piovani: Cantata for narrator, soprano and small orchestra’.
We are very proud to pay homage to Dante Alighieri, father of the Italian language, with an extraordinary work that combines eternal poetry and beautiful music composed by Nicola Piovani. The concert also celebrates the deep and ancient bond that unites Dante with Spanish culture and is part of Madrid City of Dante’s programme of activities, an initiative promoted by the Italian and Madrid academic cultural world to pay homage to Dante Alighieri. – Marialuisa Pappalardo, director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid
“La Vita Nuova” is performed by Valentina Varriale (soprano) , Matteo Gatta (narrator) and ORCAM (Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid) directed by the composer Nicola Piovani, Lifetime Achievement Award winner of the 9th Madrid Italian Film Festival.
It is a short musical work inspired by Dante’s astonishing poetic work: stupendous both in the narrated contents and in its surprising form, which Dante experts still debate today. A musician like me, however, questions the strong emotion that this work still arouses in a reader from the third millennium, and which I have tried to express in musical terms. – Nicola Piovani.
The concert will take place on 25 March at 7:30 pm in the Sala de Cámara of the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. Information and bookings on iicmadrid.esteri.it
