The 2020 edition of the Venice International Film Festival opened in Italy, the first post-pandemic edition, and is now set to land in China. The family novel ‘The Ties’, brought to the big screen by Daniele Lucchetti, taken from the book by Domenico Starnone and newly released in China, is the star of this screening organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai, in collaboration with the Shanghai Film Association.

The screening, to be held on June 26, 2021, will be introduced and discussed by Marco Müller, critic and former artistic director of the Venice Film Festival and the Rome Film Fest.

And it is Marco Müller himself, in his role as director of the Shanghai University Film Research Centre, who will curate the overview of Italian film trades, entitled ‘Mestiere Cinema’ scheduled from 21 to 30 June 2021 at Shanghai Film Academy, as part of the Fare Cinema 2021 event. An all-encompassing journey behind the scenes of Italian cinema, past and present, and the great dream factory that is Cinecittà.

A number of films and documentaries dedicated to the film trades will be screened during the festival, including:

  • ‘Dante Ferretti. Production Designer’ by Gianfranco Giagni (2010)
  • ‘Segretarie. Una vita per il cinema’ (Personal assistants. A life for film) by Raffaele Rago and Daniela Masciale (2019)
  • ‘Un amico magico. Il maestro Nino Rota’ (One magical friend. The maestro Nino Rota) by Mario Monicelli (1994)
  • ‘L’abito e il volto. Incontro con Piero Tosi’ (The dress and the face. Meeting with Piero Tosi) by Francesco Costabile (2008).
