In the year of the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of the Sicilian writer Leonardo Sciascia, the Italian Cultural Institute of Dublin proposes two unmissable events linked to the translation and first publication in English of the 1950 text ‘Favole della dittatura’.
In December 2021, thanks to a joint initiative of the Italian Cultural Institutes of Dublin, Edinburgh and London, a limited edition of ‘Tales from the Dictatorship’ will be published in the English translation specially edited by Ann Goldstein.
The text will be accompanied by an introduction from the Italianist Joseph Farrell and by a piece of writing entitled ‘Dittatura in fiaba‘ (Dictatorship in a fairy tale) by Pier Paolo Pasolini, which first appeared in the magazine ‘La libertà d’Italia’ on 9 March 1951.
In Dublin the following events will take place:
- 18 November 2021. Concert/recital with live performance of the original music ‘Five Sicilian Preludes’, for guitar and speaker, composed based on the ‘Favole della dittatura’ (Tales from the dictatorship) by the Irish guitarist Benjamin Dwyer and performed by M. Dario Macaluso. Actress Nicole Rourke will read the ‘Tales’ in Ann Goldstein’s translation. Free event at Dublin’s St. Stephen’s Church.
- 30 November 2021. Academic round table in English entitled ‘Tales from the dictatorship:a Homage to Leonardo Sciascia’ which will be attended by the translator Ann Goldstein and some of the leading experts in Italian literature of the twentieth century from the Universities of Dublin and Cork. Free event on the online platform.
