For Italian Design Day 2021, the Consulate of Italy in Belo Horizonte offers a detailed look at Memphis, the style followed by collective of designers and architects formed in Milan in the 1980s, with an interview with one of its founders, Marco Zanini.
Memphis, especially when it comes to decoration, is a style filled with irreverent choices in colour and shape, which go well beyond any conventional approach to design. This style exerted international influence, particularly in Brazil – think of the architecture by Minas Gerais, which was strongly influenced by this movement in the 1980s and 1990s.
The Memphis event is the third episode of Idee di Design, a project conceived and created by the Consulate of Belo Horizonte to illustrate the strong influence – past and present – of Italian design throughout the world in a series of thematic videos released across the year.
The episodes, in Portuguese with Italian subtitles, are available on the Consulate’s YouTube and IGTV channels.
