To mark the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, on 14 October the Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney and KLASSIK underground present the online event ‘Musicando Dante. Viaggio musicale in tre parti attraverso l’Inferno, il Purgatorio e il Paradiso’ (A three-part musical journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven).

During the performance, filmed in the Moritzbastei underground cultural centre in Leipzig, the expressive interplay of musical language and Dante’s verses tell a unique story. To the sounds of chamber music concertos, performed by the musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the actress and Italian musician Rebecca Viora will recite the three cantos of the Divine Comedy.

The emotional and expressive nature of the performances will be further accentuated by artist Tilo Baumgärtel’s video installation, inspired by William Blake’s 102 illustrations based on Dante’s work.

The event will conclude with a live link-up with actress Rebecca Viora from Italy and musician and producer Thalia Petrosian from Germany.
