On 10 June, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Zagreb and the Comites of Fiume, the first edition of the itinerant theatre festival ‘Il Carro di Tespi – Teatro italiano in piazza’ kicked off. It is a stage performance and meeting point for artists, actors, directors, creative people, critics, professionals and fans of contemporary theatre. Taking its cue from the famous ‘chariots of Thespis’, with reference to the figure of Thespis of Icaria described by Horace in the Ars Poetica, the project is based on the idea of mobile theatres created to bring theatre into the squares with the aim of bringing all social strata of the population closer to theatre culture.
The backdrop for this first edition will be three charming Istrian villages: Montona, Portole and Villanova (Verteneglio), whose main squares will be set up to welcome the public and keep them company on pleasant summer evenings.
