An evening of science and knowledge was held on 27 September in the auditorium of the Italian Cultural Institute of Beijing, dedicated to the presentation of the Chinese edition of the book ‘In un volo di storni. Le meraviglie dei sistemi complessi’ (In a flight of starlings. The wonders of complex systems) by Prof. Giorgio Parisi, Nobel Prize winner for physics and vice president of the Accademia dei Lincei.

The book, a didactic and autobiographical work to understand Parisi’s discoveries on the interaction between disorder and fluctuations in complex physical systems, was translated into Chinese by Prof. Federico Wen Zheng, Director of the Italian Department at Beijing Foreign Studies University.

The event, organised by the Italian Embassy in Beijing and the Italian Institute of Culture, with the support of the Association of Italian Academics in China, was attended by Prof. Parisi himself (remotely) and Prof. Wen, as well as various representatives of the Italian and Chinese academic worlds and, in particular, Prof. Wu Yongshi, a physicist from Fudan University and Utah University with whom the Italian Nobel Prize winner collaborated on an important scientific research project in the early 1980s.

In their speeches, the Ambassador of Italy to China, Luca Ferrari, and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing, Federico Roberto Antonelli, emphasised the importance of Prof. Parisi’s work and the profound value of translation into Chinese in the context of cultural exchanges between Italy and China.

We are happy to have Prof. Parisi with us, a modern-day excellence that confirms the great tradition of Italian physics, which, since the time of Enrico Fermi and the ‘boys from Via Panisperna’, has always been at the forefront of research. An example of professionalism for young researchers and students, both Italian and Chinese.

reported Ambassador Ferrari.
