The Italian Cultural Institute of Ljubljana presents a concert by the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti on 19 July.
The concert programme, sponsored by the Italian Ambassador to Slovenia, H.E. Carlo Campanile, consists of works by three Romantic composers based on an external poetic idea. Georges Bizet‘s ‘Symphony No. 2’, inspired by his Roman sojourn, retains the symphonic form, while Franz Liszt‘s ‘The Preludes’ are some of his earliest works created in the symphonic poem form, of which the Hungarian composer is considered the inventor. Also in the same form is ‘The Enchanted Lake’ by Anatolij Ljadov, who found the poetic idea for this work in the world of fairy tales.
Riccardo Muti is considered one of the best conductors in the world. The most prestigious orchestras on the planet – such as the Berlin, New York and Vienna Philharmonics – have all played under his direction. No less than six times has Muti conducted the last of these in the famous New Year’s Concert. For almost twenty years, he was the artistic director of the Teatro alla Scala, where he staged the Wagner tetralogy ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’ and performed various then-forgotten operas of the past. In 2004, he founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, which includes young Italian musicians selected by an international jury. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, the orchestra performs at the Ravenna Festival every year.
