On 25 March, the UNESCO Palace in Beirut will host ‘San Francesco e il Sultano’, a musical drama for four paintings written by Bartolomeo Pirone to celebrate the eighth centenary (1219-2019) of the historic meeting between Saint Francis and the Sultan al-Malek al-Kāmil in Damietta, Egypt.
Bartolomeo Pirone is full professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arabic-Islamic and Mediterranean Studies at the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’, and guest professor at the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome.
The music is by Father Khalil Rahme, composer and director of the School of Music at Notre Dame University in Lebanon.
