Kicking off with the screening of the film ‘I Basilischi’ (1963), the ‘Seven Beauties’ event is dedicated to the Italian director Lina Wertmüller and is organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney in collaboration with Ritz Cinema in Randwick and Cinema Reborn, with support from the Ministry of Culture.
Irreverent, revolutionary and impossible to define, Lina Wertmüller was the first woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Director in 1977. An outspoken feminist and nonconformist, her films examine absurd situations in society and transform them, with results that are sometimes witty, sometimes shocking, but always political. The series celebrates her work with seven of her best films.
The film will be introduced by Professor Jane Mills of the School of the Arts & Media at the University of New South Wales, and by a greeting from Lina Wertmüller specially recorded for the event.
