The Italian Cultural Institute of Athens presents the inauguration of the “Inner Life” exhibition by the Venetian painter Sonia Ros on 19 May.

The exhibition is a co-production of the Institute with Athens International Airport, curated by Afrodite Oikonomidou. The event enjoys the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Athens, the Veneto Region and IGAV-Istituto Garuzzo for Visual Arts.

Sonia Ros, an established Venetian artist, has shaped her work on research between the real and the imaginary, in an ingenious attempt to balance the abstract and the figurative. Her large canvases, apparently chaotic compositions, lead us into utopian landscapes characterized by the looming presence of figures in continuous movement, imaginary primordial existences, unreal bodies that unwind in a dance between physicality and emotion, between dream and reality. In the new series of works selected for this exhibition, the artist attempts a very special approach to the topic of travel, through the prism of intimacy.

The creation of the works stems from the idea that our every move is an adventure and everything we choose to carry with us in our luggage hides an inner life, reflects our personal identity.

The artistic installation “Inner Life” by Sonia Ros was presented for the first time with great success at the Marco Polo airport in Venice, edited by Silvio Fuso, during the 2019 Art Biennale. Refurbished, with authentic material from the Athens Airport monitors, it now “lands” in the Greek capital, with a selection of works hosted at the Italian Cultural Institute in Athens. At the same time, six impressive large works, full of enigmatic figures and explosive colours will animate the arrivals halls of Athens International Airport from 11 April to 11 September 2022.

Sonia Ros was born in Conegliano (TV). She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, studying painting with Maurizio Martelli, Luca Bendini and Carlo Maschietto and currently lives and works between Venice and Vittorio Veneto. She has exhibited her works throughout Italy (Venice, Rome, Turin, Genoa, Palermo, Spoleto, Treviso, etc.) and in Europe (London, Brussels, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Sofia)
