On the occasion of the year of Dante the Italian Cultural Institute of Berlin will hold a series of dialogues on the theme ‘Dante and the visual’, curated by Michele Cometa.

The last event,Un poema tra le nuvole. Le illustrazioni della Commedia dalle miniature ai fumetti’ (A poem in the clouds. Illustrations of the Comedy from miniatures to comics) is scheduled for Wednesday 28 April, at 7:00pm, live-streamed via Zoom and on the Institute’s Facebook page, in Italian and German with simultaneous translation.

Speakers: Giovanna Rizzarelli (University of Ferrara)
Moderation: Michele Cometa (University of Palermo)

The event offers a journey through the images inspired by Dante’s poem, building on the 14th-century miniatures to create graphic novel adaptations of the Comedy.
The leitmotif of this panorama of the iconographic wealth of the poem is represented by the visual transpositions of the reading scene that constitutes the heart of the V Canto of the Inferno. Books, and both male and female readers, which take shape from Dante’s text through ancient and modern images, allow us to observe the illustrative history of Dante’s poem from an unusual perspective between high culture and popular reception.

The series of meetings takes place in collaboration with the Prints and Drawings Department of the State Museums of Berlin, which opens the exhibition Höllenschwarz und Sternenlicht. Dantes Göttliche Komödie in Moderne und Gegenwart on 2 June.
