The collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing and the China Film Archive continues after last year’s successful retrospective dedicated to Federico Fellini. From December 25 2021 to January 23 2022, a review dedicated to another great master of Italian cinema will take place: Vittorio De Sica, whose 120th anniversary is being celebrated this year.
The review, which includes eight of the Maestro’s most representative works, will be in the cinema hall of the Chinese Cinema Archive. Films will be shown in the original language with Chinese subtitles.
The review is intended to be a chance to rediscover the themes and characters portrayed in De Sica’s films. He was an actor and a screenwriter, but above all one of the filmmakers who contributed most to the rebirth of Italian cinema in the post-war period and, together with Roberto Rossellini and Luchino Visconti, to the birth of Neorealism with the two masterpieces ‘Shoeshine’’ (1946) and ‘Bicycle Thieves‘ (1948), both of which won the special Oscar, which was later replaced by the prize for Best Foreign Language Film.
Out of the eight films on the programme, which are all in DCP digital format, both ‘Miracle in Milan’ and ‘The Garden of the Finzi Contini’ have been restored in 4K by the Cineteca di Bologna.
The exhibition was supported by the Italian Cultural Institute of Beijing.
