On the occasion of the XXI Week of Italian Language in the World, the Italian Cultural Institute of Cairo present a rich series of events and conferences dedicated to ‘Dante, l’italiano’ – theme of the year.

  • 18 October. Official inauguration of the Week, in attendance and online on the Institute’s Facebook page. Welcome speeches from the Davide Scalmani (Director of the Institute) and Elisabeth Gilgen (Chargée d’Affaires, Swiss Embassy). Awarding of the winning students of the competitions dedicated to Dante, and performance of contemporary dance ‘Dante’ by choreographer Mounir Saeed. Screening of the show ‘Divina Commedia‘ by Romeo Castellucci, and of passages from the Divine Comedy recited in Arabic by Ashraf Farouk, Amir Salaheldin, Sherine Hegazy, Sarra El Mokadem, and directed by Gianluca Barbadori.
  • 23 and 24 October. International conference ‘Dante and the Arabic world’, in collaboration with the Italian Department of Badr University in Cairo. Dante’s relationship with the Arab world—both past and present—is a rich one, that has only recently started to attract due attention especially after Asin Palacios in his comparative study illustrates how Dante was influenced by the Eastern sources. By bringing together scholars who are interested in Dante and his works, the conference will focus on Dante’s reception in the Arab World and in world literature, to name but a few salient topics.
  • 23 and 24 October. ‘Dante 700 Concert’, in collaboration with MUST University. On the occasion of the Dante anniversary, Maestro Elio Orciuolo conducts a special concert dedicated to the Poet with the special participation of pianist Vincenzo Rana and soprano Sara Allegretta. Reading from the Divine Comedy by Davide Pandolfo.
