The Italian Cultural Institute of Helsinki is taking part in the celebrations dedicated to Dante for the 21st Week of the Italian Language in the World with a packed programme.

From 14 September to 29 October, the Italian Cultural Institutes of Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm will host on their Instagram and Facebook pages ‘E quindi uscimmo a riveder le nuvolette. Dante in Comics‘ (And thence we came forth to rebehold the speech bubbles. Dante in Comics), a virtual exhibition to discover how Dante’s masterpiece has been told and depicted by some of the most important authors of Italian comics.

From 19 to 30 October the exhibition ‘E quindi uscimmo a riveder le nuvolette‘ (And thence we came forth to rebehold the speech bubbles) will be exhibited to the public at the Municipal Library of Pori.

The week continues on 20 and 21 October with the concert ‘La dolcezza ancora dentro mi suona – Sulous your soi sielussani yhä‘ (The sweetness sounds within me still – Sulous tuo soi sielussani yhä) by the ensemble Yr Awen. The performance will be held at the House of Nobility in Helsinki and is designed to immerse the public in Dante’s world, in that intensely international culture where music played a leading role. Music is accompanied by readings of Dante’s work in Finnish and Italian.

On 28 October Neri Binazzi, Professor of Sociolinguistics and Dialectology at the University of Florence, will hold an online conversation with Professor Antonio Sciacovelli of the University of Turku on the language of Dante and the language of ‘Mickey’s Inferno‘ by Guido Martina and Angelo Bioletto.

The programme ends on 3 November with the conference ‘Poesia e nazione: Dante and Lönrrot‘ (Poetry and nation: Dante and Lönrrot) run by Enrico Garavelli and Vesa Matteo Piludu, respectively Professor and Researcher at the University of Helsinki. During the meeting the specific characteristics of the two poems will be analysed in relation to the nineteenth-century literary trends and the role of artists and writers in the two national epics. The conference will be held in person at the Italian Cultural Institute in Helsinki, but it will also be possible to watch it online.
