XXI Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo

From 18 to 24 October 2021, the Italian Cultural Institute of Jakarta will dedicate a series of events and initiatives to Dante, on the occasion of the XXI Week of the Italian Language in the World.

On October 18, the programme includes ‘Dante e la sua ombra’ (Dante and his Shadow): a meeting with the Italian and Indonesian artists of the VideoDante project devised by Instabili Vaganti and promoted by the Italian Cultural Institute of Jakarta. The event will feature the artists of Instabili Vaganti, Anna Dora Dorno (director), Nicola Pianzola (performer) and Riccardo Nanni (musician and composer). On the Indonesian side, there will be Made Suteja (Balinese theatre performer), Kadek Budi Setiawan (Balinese shadow theatre performer), Elly Eviana (dancer) and Rosemainy Buang (gamelan musician). The meeting, held in Italian with simultaneous Indonesian translation, focuses on the creative process that led to the creation of the web series.

On the opening day of the festival, the programme also includes ‘Il Purgatorio, cantica della rinascita’ (Purgatory, Canticle of Rebirth), a webinar by Bianca Garavelli, writer and interpreter on Dante, and author, among other things, of the thriller ‘Le terzine perdute di Dante’ (The Lost Tercets of Dante) (BUR 2015). The meeting will be held in Italian with simultaneous English translation.

On 19 October, the Compagnia Rossignol, an association of artists and researchers founded in 1987 in Cremona, presents the show ‘A riveder le stelle’ (To See the Stars Again), featuring songs, music and dance from the 13th to the 16th century on verses from the Divine Comedy.

On 21 October, the Artemis Danza Company presents the digital project ‘Ombre’, 3 choreographic pieces in the form of a short film dedicated to the souls of Dante’s Inferno: Charon, Minosse, Francesca Da Rimini, Farinata Degli Uberti, Pietro Della Vigna, Ulysses and Count Ugolino are some of the characters chosen by Monica Casadei to investigate the human soul and compose a poetic and perturbing picture.

On 22 October, there will be two lectures on Dante: ‘Il pensiero di Dante e la sua poetica. La modernità di Dante’ (Dante’s thought and poetics: the modernity of Dante) by Professor Marina Castiglione (University of Palermo) and ‘La Poesia Dantesca: Metafora di un Eterno Presente’ (Dantean Poetry: Metaphor of an Eternal Present) by Professor Paolo Pizzimento (University of Messina). The meeting will be introduced by the Director of the Institute, Maria Battaglia, and by Professor Antonietta Maria Sireci, Italian Language Assistant at the University of Indonesia.

The festival will close with the show ‘Dante delle Marionette’ (Dante of the Puppets) by the Compagnia Carlo Colla & Figli. The show takes the audience on a journey into a fantastic world in which the work of the Grande Maestro and the language of puppets merge in an original theatrical creation combining great literature and puppet theatre.
