Nik Erik Neubauer‘s photographic project ‘Quando vai al Sud piangi sempre due volte‘ (When You Go to the South You Always Cry Two Times) consists of a book and an exhibition at the Galerija Fotografija in Ljubljana, directed by Barbara Čeferin. The selection of images on display is the result of many years of work that chronicle the artist’s experience living in Southern Italy. Photographs and poetic texts are displayed in sequence, like segments of a personal diary, providing the sensation of an ubiquitous contrast between love and passion: warmth on the one hand, and the harshness and persistence of the environment over time on the other.
This book is a tribute to the city of Bari and other parts of southern Italy, where I lived an intense and unforgettable period of my life. It is a tribute to my friends, to the strangers who became my friends and to the strangers who have remained so, but who have allowed me to capture a moment in their lives. […] A foreigner who comes to the south always cries two times: once he arrives and once when he leaves. – Nik Erik Neubauer
Neubauer, a young photographer who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, works in black and white and devotes himself to street photography, publishing photozines in which he interweaves text and images. ‘Quando vai al Sud piangi sempre due volte’ is his first book.
