The Campiello Junior is the new prize created by the Fondazione Il Campiello, an award recognizing works of Italian fiction and poetry for children, not translated from another language, aimed at an audience of readers between the ages of 10 and 14.

The Prize, created in collaboration with the Fondazione Pirelli, was conceived with the aim of promoting reading among the younger generations and highlighting the value of children’s literature through educational institutions in Italy and abroad. This literary trend is important for the range of themes and genres addressed, but particularly for its powerful pedagogical dimension.

Among the latest additions to the initiative, which is in its first edition, is the involvement of students from Italian state schools abroad, thus continuing the fruitful collaboration set up between the Fondazione Il Campiello and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

On the occasion of the award ceremony for the 59th edition of the Campiello Prize, held on 4 September at the Venice Arsenal, Antonio Calabrò, Pirelli’s Head of Institutional Affairs and Senior Advisor for Culture, presented the new initiative: ‘We are convinced that working on the delight of new readers is an extraordinary horizon of quality for our country, which has an impact on entertainment and democracy’, he said, thus underlining the importance of the Prize for enticing young people to experience the pleasure of reading and contributing to the civil and cultural education of a new generation of readers.

The Selection Meeting, open to the public, will be held on 10 December 2021, where a technical Jury of five members, literary scholars and experts in the field, will select the trio of finalists. A Jury of Readers will decide the winner from the three works chosen, which will be made up of 160 children who attend primary school (class V) and lower secondary school (class I, II, III). Both individual young readers and schools will be able to sign up. Students from the seven state schools abroad will have the right to reserve places as members of the Jury of Readers.

Interested students and classes can enrol by 15 November, 2021 by filling out the dedicated form. The rules of the first edition and further details can be found at premiocampiello.org.
