The winners of the competition When the children teach us have been announced: this year  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has extended it to Italian schools abroad for the first time ever.

The initiative, which is sponsored by the Centre for Books and Reading of the Ministry of Culture and by the Ministry of Education, aims to  encourage reading, reworking of the topics and sharing of experience and knowledge – including from an intercultural perspective. Secondary school students were invited to get involved by making a video of a lesson on the work of an author of classical or contemporary Italian literature.

The “Pietro della Valle” Italian School in Tehran tied for first place with the Liceo Longone in Milan with a lesson dedicated to Leopardi’s Canti. With a video on Fabio Geda’s work In the Sea There are Crocodiles, the Liceo scientifico Alessandro Manzoni in Villa Adelina (Argentina) ranked in second place, tying with the Istituto Volta Polo 3 in Fano. The Scuola italiana paritaria Dante Alighieri in Cordoba ranked in third place alongside the Istituto Salvemini in Alessano with an interpretation of Leopardi’s The Calm after the Storm..

A jury of experts made up of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Centre for Books and Reading and the Ministry of Education evaluated the submissions. The award ceremony took place at the Turin International Book Fair on Sunday, May 22nd. The three pairs of winners will take part in a “literary twinning”, which has the aim of facilitating the exchange of experiences and intercultural knowledge between groups of students in Italy and abroad.
