Istituto Italiano Statale Comprensivo di Barcellona – Comprehensive Italian State School of Barcelona – upper secondary school

The foundation of the Italian state school dates back to 1882, when it was created in Barcelona through a private initiative of the Italian charitable society “Società Italiana di Beneficenza e Mutuo Soccorso”, now the “Casa degli Italiani”. In 1911, the School moved to its current location, in the builing belonging to the “Casa degli Italiani” Association, which was built by emigrants from Italy. From the 1920s, the “Casa degli Italiani” also founded a secondary school specializing in technical subjects. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs decreed the status of official state school in 1951. Four years later, the Cultural Agreement between Italy and Spain was signed in Rome.
The Comprehensive Italian State School of Barcelona was established in 2003 by combining in a single institution the “Maria Montessori” state primary school, the “Edoardo Amaldi” lower secondary school – both located in the Sarrià building – and the Liceo Scientifico “Edoardo Amaldi” located in the historical Pasaje Mendez Vigo building.
The final academic qualifications awarded by both the Barcelona schools have legal value both in Italy and in Spain. The teaching of Italian curricular subjects is integrated with the study of the Spanish language and culture.
