The Italian-Uzbek archaeological work in the Samarkand region, in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and “L’Orientale” University of Naples, began in 2008 with the aim of identifying the cultural horizons of the Achaemenid and post-Achaemenid period (6th-3rd centuries BC) in ancient Sogdiana and analyse the different aspects of urban evolution in the related district. Excavation of the Kojtepa site is ongoing. The project is led by Prof. Bruno Genito.
