The Institute, whose main institutional goal is to improve awareness of the Italian language, art and culture, organizes cultural events and operates an excellent and up-to-date library, from which all the Institute members can loan books and audiovisual materials. The Institute promotes a wide range of events, such as exhibitions, concerts, plays and conferences. The Institute is also responsible for creating a network linking the University of Malta and other Maltese study and research centres with Italian universities, organizations and state institutions.
The Hall of the Institute, where most of the cultural events take place, is of particular artistic value for the frescoes that decorate the ceiling.
The Italian Cultural Institute is also the Cultural Office of the Italian Embassy in Malta.
The purposes of the Italian Cultural Institutes are listed in Italian Law 401/90.
