The Italian School in Lagos was founded in the 1960s on the initiative of some representatives of Italian companies with economic interests in Nigeria, with the purpose of offering the children of employees working in the country an education in line with their cultural roots and traditions. The school grew during the 1980s, new and larger sites were inaugurated and, in 2004, it obtained official state authorization. To promote the cultural integration of foreign pupils, the nursery and primary schools are partially bilingual and, whilst Italian is the basic language used for nearly all teaching, some subjects are taught in English by native speakers.
