Italian Mission in Chikiani (Georgia)

‘Mt Chikiani obsidian sources (Lesser Caucasus, Georgia)’.

‘Ca’ Foscari’ University of Venice, Dorsoduro 3439/A, 30123 Venice (VE), Italy.

The project began in 2014 under the guidance of Prof. Paolo Biagi and has the purpose of completing the research in the region of the Chikiani volcano (Kayun Dag) close to Lake Paravani (Georgian Caucasus), the site of the largest sources of obsidian, exploited between the Middle Palaeolithic and the Iron Age. The research and scientific analyses conducted (2014-2018) identified four lava flows containing obsidian formed around 2 million years ago.
