Qala’at Halwanji
University of Pisa, Lungarno Pacinotti 43, 56126 Pisa (PI), Italy
Qala’at Halwanji is located in north-western Syria along the course of the Sajur River. The site was briefly occupied during the Early Bronze IV and Middle Bronze II periods, when Qala’at Halwanji became an important military fortress. Its destruction, culminating in a fire, allowed for exceptional preservation of the remains, up to 3 metres high. Since 2009, no further excavations have been possible due to the serious political situation in the country.
