The Liceo “Galileo Galilei”, with the vast experience of over 100 years, is an integral part of both the Italian and Turkish education systems. It was established in 1870 as an Italian School for Girls with a Nursery and a Primary School on the initiative of the Major Superior of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea, Mother Luigia Canegrati, for the education of Italian girls living in Turkey. The school was later opened to Italian, foreign and Turkish girls, initially with around 80 students and reaching 350 female students within a decade. At the end of the 1990s, the school was expanded to include a Lower Secondary School in 1996 and the Liceo Scientifico in 2000, open to Italian, foreign and Turkish students of both genders. The school’s prerogative is to encourage students to develop creative, operational and critical skills through comparison and dialogue with different cultures and in particular with Italy.
