‘Italian-Spanish Archaeological Project in Melka Kunture and Balchit’.
Sapienza University of Rome, Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, 00185 Rome (RM), Italy.
The archaeological project has been operating since 1999 under the guidance of Prof. Margherita Mussi in Melka Kunture, site of the UNESCO Tentative List for Ethiopia, on levels dated between 1,800,000 and 10,000 years ago, which record the main evolutionary stages of man, starting with Homo erectus. At 2000 m in altitude, with a cold and rainy climate, this is currently the only place where it is possible to study human evolution and adaptation to environments other than those of the savannah, as a premise to the population middle latitudes and Europe.
