The project, active since 2001 and led by Prof. Mario Capasso, has the primary objective of performing the rigorously stratigraphic archaeological excavation of the Greco-Roman city of Soknopaiou Nesos/Dime es-Seba, located in the Egyptian region of Fayyum, approx. 2 km from Lake Qarun. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC and, at its peak, had a population of several thousand people and a thousand houses. It includes a very significant temple complex dominated by the sanctuary of the crocodile god Soknopaios.
