In Hamburg the Sicilian pianist Giuseppe Andaloro celebrates the ‘Sommo Poeta’.
Dante in musica
Dante concerto def

Telling the story of Dante and his verses through music.

The Sicilian pianist Giuseppe Andaloro, born in 1982, attempts to do just that, with a concert that includes works by Marenzio, Luzzaschi, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Wolf-Ferrari.

The event will be hosted on 28 October 2021, at 7 pm at the Italian Cultural Institute of Hamburg.  The concert seeks to celebrate the ‘Supreme Poet’ in the year of the seven hundredth anniversary of his death.

There are very few musical pieces on Dante’s verses that have reached us from his contemporaries, nor from the centuries immediately following. It was only thanks to the cultural and spiritual fervour of the Renaissance and the development of vocal polyphony that Dante’s literature regained interest.

Andaloro’s programme begins with a madrigal by Luca Marenzio, followed by that of his contemporary Luzzasco Luzzaschi, and reaches its expressive peak in the romanticism of Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Rachmaninov. The programme ends with a special piece for the pianist: Franz Liszt’s “Sonata Dante”.

Admission to the concert is free.

Registration is required by email to events@iic-hamburg.de.
